My Dying Bride Ranking. Finnish Albums I Enjoy. Last 10 Songs On Shuffle. Unlike previous lists, this one doesn't include lyrics, because it is known that the vocalist likes to use double meanings and wordplays, so the accuracy of current translation databases cannot be guaranteed. Dir En Grey MACABRE After a stellar debut, the band, brimming with ideas, tried to expand their sound and reach new heights, but instead ended up just with a great record, lacking the proper experience and production to fully unleash its potential.
Dir En Grey Kisou Like Macabre, Kisou is a lengthy affair that experiments with different sounds, yet manages to be slightly more focused compared to its predecessor. Despite its entertaining and varied nature, an underlying morose feeling adorns a lot of the tracks no matter their tempos.
Many older fans discovered the band through this album, being the one Dir En Grey promoted when they visited Europe and America for the first time. Interestingly, the highlights are the longest and most disparate songs, one depicting a haunting gothic-tinged anti-abortion song built around incessant guitars and samples, and the other a melancholic elegy of a forlorn love, embellished with violin notes and melodic guitars. The numerous techniques and effects of the guitar duo complete the blend of ardent darkness, insanity, spirituality and solemnity, while the rhythm section maintains the diversity, with bassist Toshiya and drummer Shinya proving to be groovy, subdued, funky or downright ferocious.
In contrast to its precursor, the record is more attracted to the other side of the globe through the scattered oriental vibe and use of additional instruments such as sitars, biwa and mandolin. The remaster offers clarity and richness while losing the more prominent, albeit tinny, drum sound of the original. Dir En Grey Dum Spiro Spero An unsettling painting of the band reaching new extremes, drawn on the avant-garde metal canvas laid by Uroboros with stronger progressive death metal contrasts and shades of deathcore and doom metal.
The solitary, poignant piano notes followed by grotesque noises manifest the desire for the darkest atmosphere right from the intro. This has been on my mind for a long time, but a few things delayed my work on the descriptions. Happy kinda late birthday, Kyo and Kaoru!
Very nice list Evo. Well, all my 4's from this band are really close to each other, so it's been kinda hard to do Having to do a distinction between the top 3 also made me quite annoyed haha. Yeah, Arche is marginally weaker than DSS and Uro, for me, but damn are the last three life changing. Hm, that's fine; it's Arche that started your love for the band, after all. True, I think it has more of an identity than Uroboros and the overall atmosphere is to die for.
Uroboros gave a whole new identity and quality to the band that they never had before, though, and I think Arche wouldn't have been the same without it. Clearly it was their breakthrough but Arche being more stripped back and reserved lets the more tranquil side of them shine. This is now the only band I will ever pre order for, I have faith.
Always a pleasure reading the descriptions on Evo's rankings even when I know nothing about the band. Even if you don't like this band I think Kyo can blow anyone away if they like any metal Rik Thanks a lot! DSS Master Race get with the program. Yeah, I know, just keep the disagreements friendly haha. The day I fight over which Dir en Grey album is the best is the day I give up on life tbh. This is a pretty good list. Don't expect a DSS Part 2, far lighter affair but ultimately just as worthy to it. Beautiful descriptions as always. I completely overlooked this yesterday somehow. Evo is like the devil on your shoulders, prodding you with his fork to jam more Diru and I'm like the merchant from Resi 4 laughing in the corner stroking my collection.
Steep prices, but they do put a lot of work into the special editions. I had a stage where I was collecting all the EP's, but the only really interesting ones are Uroboros onward.
I love how they insert live dvd's for the limited edition singles of Arche. My list so far of things to buy: Yeah, AQA and Rasa having dvd only limted was just a strange move to me.

Also yes I agree so hard with them doing what almost no band does and actually makes their singles worth buying. Most people still buy DVD's mostly, so they're the biggest money makers. It's worth it cuz the image quality improvement is tremendous on properly done Blu-rays. Bumping just to say if people here haven't checked their live stuff Having only heard 4, 6, and 9 in full and enjoying them a lot, I'm stoked to jam I might jam Uroboros later today, is it recommended that I start with the expanded edition or the regular version?
Calc Oh, thank you for that! I should also add that the remaster features Japanese-language versions of Glass Skin and Dozing Green; far more superior than the Engrish-y renditions.
